Ginger shots were so appealing to me because I already loved the taste of ginger in food and can’t get enough of it. Although it was so strong that I can’t drink it without honey. I highly recommend giving this a try, just be careful not to take too much ginger at once, remember everything in moderation.

Here was my experience of 30 days of ginger shots!

Ingredients you’re going to need

  • Ginger: I always use fresh ginger root. It gives the strongest flavour which I love. But you can use ground ginger powder. Ginger powder actually has a higher content of polyphenols meaning it has more antioxidants. (Isn’t that strange to think about?)
  • Lemon juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice is the best! I find packaged lemon juice even more sour and not as bright as fresh lemon juice, because of all the additives and preservatives in it.
  • Honey: Some people use coconut water to balance the pungent ginger lemon flavour, but I use honey instead because I want the antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory benefits. Also it’s less expensive hehe. 0.0
  • Cayenne Pepper (optional): This is to give the ginger shots some heat, and also to improve circulation and digestion. But you can also leave it out because I know some people don’t take spice very well.
    • substitutions: paprika, red pepper flakes, chilli flakes, gochugaru

How to make ginger shots at home

Using 4 simple ingredients, a simple blender and a strainer is all you need to start juicing!

  1. Wash and peel the ginger root. Although we are going to be straining it, I still peel the ginger root because it’s a root vegetable. I like to be extra sure I don’t have dirt in my ginger shot XD.
  2. Roughly chop the ginger. Especially if you have a simple blender like me, big chunks are just going to get stuck and it’s not going to blend so easily.
  3. Juice fresh lemons. Straight into the blender, lemon seeds will be strained out anyways.
  4. Add honey to taste. Honey is a really healthy option to help balance the flavour of ginger.
  5. Strain well. It’s almost impossible to drink ginger shots without straining because it’s so fibrous! I tried it, and then quickly reached for the strainer.
  6. Serve. Ginger shots are meant to be drunk as a shot, it’s literally in the name because it’s full of antioxidants that oxidize when exposed to air, so if you really want all the benefits of the ginger shot, drink it right away ❤️.

Health benefits of ginger shots

  • Ginger is full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory so it’s helpful for digestive support if you need to add warmth to your stomach. If you are sensitive to pepper or chilli’s thought then your stomach might be too “warm”, because ginger literally raises the temperature.
  • Lemon is full of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant as well
  • Honey is a superfood full of amino acids, vitamins, minerals, iron, zinc and antioxidants.
  • Cayenne Pepper

What I’ve experienced so far

It’s been fun doing the ginger shots. It does take quite a lot of time to make them every morning. It’s best to make them fresh because we don’t want the antioxidants to oxidize in the fridge day by day, however even I get busy so sometimes I will make enough to last me about 5 days.

If you have no time, and have the money, there are amazing companies that make packaged ginger shot drinks sealed and delivered to you. It is much more expensive though, and you can’t control the sweetness of them, I find they usually have a very strong ginger taste.

I definitely felt like my digestion improved, I was less bloated and felt like I digested my food faster oddly enough. “Eating ginger encourages efficient digestion, so food doesn’t linger as long in the gut.”, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Also, I have less rosacea now. That is a concerning skin issue to me.

Should You Drink Ginger Shots On An Empty Stomach?

It really depends on your health and what your stomach is like. To be on the safe side don’t drink it on an empty stomach, ginger is a very strong raw ingredient that can change the temperature in your stomach. Raw ginger is very warm and fragrant, so if you have cold stomach and your stomach doesn’t do well with cold drinks, then perhaps you could drink it on a empty stomach. However, if you experience heart burn or get a tummy ache when you have spicy food that means that you really shouldn’t drink it on an empty stomach.

Do ginger shots help with weight loss?

Ginger has been shown to have positive effects on weight control, obesity prevention and energy metabolism. Of course, ginger is not a magic root that causes weight loss and I would take it more for the nutrition benefit.
