Vaseline has long been a staple in skincare routines as it works wonders on dry skin, chapped lips, and minor cuts and burns. However, its thick and greasy texture can also mean that washing it off your face is easier said than done. I know, first hand how frustrating it can be to have a layer of Vaseline on your skin that just won’t budge despite trying your best. But it’s actually WAY easier than you think.

How to Remove Vaseline

First Step: Use Micellar Water

I turn to micellar water and cotton pads as the first step because it physically removes the vaseline but also cuts through it like butter because Micellar water is infused with tiny particles called “micelles” that soak up dirt, oil, and makeup like a sponge. Essentially removing most of Vaseline in the first step. However, it’s important to continue with the next 2 steps to ensure that your skin is fresh and clear of Vaseline.

Second Step: Oil Cleanser

Another way to remove Vaseline is by using a cleansing oil. I love cleansing oils and there are many for you to choose from that work really well. All you need is a good cleansing oil that will break down and dissolve the Vaseline without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Once the Vaseline is dissolved, rinse your face with warm water and the Vaseline should be completely gone by now.

Third Step: Water Based Cleanser

After using an oil cleanser, I like following it up with a gentle water-based facial cleanser. Double cleansing, am I right? This ensures that all traces of the oil cleanser are removed from my face. This leaves my skin feeling fresh, clean, and free from Vaseline.

How I don’t recommend removing Vaseline

Using Warm Water

I know a lot of places like to tell you to use warm water. But I find that you’d have to do this at least 3 to 4 times and some of it still would be there. It works but, it’s not highly effective. Also if you use a washcloth to wipe away the vaseline, then the vaseline is now stuck on the washcloth and you have to wash that too. It’s a never ending cycle.

Preventing Skin Problems

Three steps just to cleanse your face of Vaseline might seem like a lot but it’s really important because Vaseline essentially creates a barrier around your skin. So although it keeps really great moisture in, it keeps all the dirt, dead skin cells and oil your skin produces in as well which could lead to more acne if not taken care of properly.

If you have acne prone skin like me, I suggest not using Vaseline the whole night, but rather just 1 to 2 hours a day if you need some moisturizing. If you leave it on the whole night it increases the chances of your skin feeling clogged up and some people find it causes more acne.

Benefits of Vaseline on Skin

As someone who has used Vaseline on my skin, I can confidently attest to its moisturizing benefits. Vaseline works as an excellent moisturizer, particularly for those who have dry or sensitive skin. It can be used on the face, lips, and hands to lock in moisture and protect the skin from further drying.

In addition to moisturizing, Vaseline creates a protective barrier on the skin that shields against environmental damages and reduces water loss. This is especially useful for those with skin conditions or easily irritated skin. The barrier formed by Vaseline can help to ease inflammation and promote healing in these situations.

Another benefit of Vaseline is its capability to help slow down the appearance of aging. As the skin loses moisture over time, it can cause fine lines and wrinkles to appear. By locking in moisture, Vaseline aids in maintaining the skin’s elasticity and reducing these visible signs of aging.

One more aspect to consider about Vaseline is its versatility. It can be used not only as a standalone moisturizer but also in combination with other skin care products. For example, I sometimes add a thin layer of Vaseline over my usual face moisturizer to enhance its effectiveness and ensure my skin stays hydrated throughout the day.

While there is no magical solution, Vaseline is a valuable addition to any skin care routine. It is simple, affordable, and offers a range of benefits to keep your skin looking and feeling its best.
