Press-on nails are unique because they are so economical and practical in comparison to conventional acrylic or gel nails. Gel manicures can be expensive and take so long to do even if you go to a nail salon! Unfortunately, one of the most common issues people have with press-on nails is that after a few days, they pop off! You’re faced with either having an unsightly manicure or constantly fixing them throughout the week.
These are all the issues, I used to have. I remember when I first used press-on nails, I was constantly pressing them, thinking they would magically stay on longer. Fortunately, now my press-on nails last 2 weeks or longer because of 11 ways I have found to make them stay on longer and keep them in pristine condition.
Why do Press-On Nails fall off so easily?
Press-on nails often fall off easily because of a variety of reasons. Some common culprits are oily nail beds, incorrect sizing, and poor application. Also, activities like dishwashing, showering and swimming can cause press-on nails to fall off more quickly.
11 Ways to Extend the Life of Press-On Nails
1. Nail Preparation
Before we apply press-on nails, a nail dehydrator is great for prepping them to be free of dirt and oils will help the press-on nails stay on longer. You could use 70% isopropyl alcohol or acetone to remove them, however, I would recommend isopropyl alcohol over acetone for this step because it’s more gentle.
2. Select The Appropriate Size
Press-on nails last longer the more your nail bed is able to cover the press-on nails. Often many guides online that I have read say to choose press-on nails that perfectly cover your nail bed. But this is hard, and what matters more is how much of the underside of the press-on nail is being used. Choose something close in size, but if your nail bed is between a smaller and larger press-on nail, choose the smaller press-on nail.
3. Invest in a Quality Adhesive
Press-on nails often come with adhesive tabs, however, these come off more quickly than simply using glue. When we go to a nail salon, they never use adhesive tabs, so why should we? Instead, use glue for nails, it is inexpensive and cost-effective as well because they usually come in a pack of 10 and last for a long time.
4. Don’t Over Apply Nail Glue
Nail glue is the key to the longevity of press-on nails, it’s the very thing holding your nails together. However, often we over-apply glue in the hopes that it will stick more, but applying excessive glue can cause the nails to lift, and using too little can cause them to fall off more rapidly.
5. Apply Firm Pressure
Pressure matters the most within the first few seconds of applying the press-on nail because the glue dries very quickly. If you apply firm pressure to each nail, it will help the glue bond more effectively because it will cover more surface area on your nail bed.
6. Be Mindful of Your Hands
If you want your nails to last longer, avoid dishwashing, gardening, or using harsh chemicals that could cause your press-on nails to last longer. Whilst this is recommended, it’s hard to follow this because we still need to do our daily activities. I still wash dishes and know that it affects the longevity of my press-on nails, but I simply wear gloves to safeguard my nails from the water.
7. Avoid Hot Water
We all love to shower with hot water, especially during the winter but they might be the cause of your press-on nail woes. Hot water can soften the glue, which is exactly the opposite of what we want, so try to use warm water instead of hot water when showering, or washing your hands.
8. Be Gentle With Your Hands
We don’t really think about how we use our nails, however sometimes we need to open an airtight jar, and we fiddle with the opening with our nails. Instead, reach for a spoon or a knife to break air seals. Being rough can cause your press-on nails to bend or you might even be breaking the airtight seal of the glue from your nails! Be gentle and you’ll prolong the life of your press-on nails.
9. Apply a Clear Top Coat
Applying a transparent topcoat to your press-on nails can protect them from chipping and allow them to have a longer-lasting shine. Usually a few days after wearing press-on nails, I find that through the wear and tear of daily activities, they shine just a little less. So to make it seem like they are new again, I apply a clear top coat one week into applying the press-on nails.
10. Steer Clear of Oily Products
Oil breaks down adhesives, and it only takes a little for your nails to start to lift, so be wary of what products you use. If you use an oil cleanser for your face, then it can’t be helped but try to avoid using oily lotions on your hands and nails.
11. Remove Press-On Nails Slowly
I say this because we don’t want to damage our natural nail beds, if they become weak, it is not a good foundation for the next set of press-on nails. So take your time to remove your press-on nails, soak your nails in warm water, or use acetone, but don’t rip it off your nail bed.
